Celebrating Darlene’s Legacy

We honor the life and legacy of Darlene Sarah McDonnell, a cherished Grange President, community leader, and advocate for education and wellness. Her contributions to the Little Deschutes Grange and beyond have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Darlene Sarah McDonnell, born December 2, 1941, was a beloved wife, mother, sister, and daughter, remembered for her warmth, humor, and dedication to her community. Raised in rural Pennsylvania, she lived a life enriched by family, animals, and a passion for gardening, literacy, and education.

Darlene was a mother of six and had countless stories about her family’s adventures with animals, including the time she wrangled turkeys in her robe and curlers, inadvertently making the morning paper. A Certified Master Gardener, she championed growing one’s own food, promoted community gardening, and led educational initiatives through the Grange, where she served as president for over nine years.

Her life was also filled with unique experiences, from working as a certified gunsmith to accidentally growing marijuana plants that amused her law enforcement friends. A lifelong advocate for literacy, she found joy in donating books and supporting young learners.

Darlene was known for her culinary skills, generously feeding neighbors, friends, and fellow Grange members. On June 27, 2024, Darlene passed peacefully at home after a day filled with the company of loved ones. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
